World gasoline prices compared to the USA
As the chart shows, most countries have more expensive gasoline than the U.S.. In many cases, the price difference is significant. The primary reason for this difference is that the fuel taxes in the U.S. are much lower than in the rest of the world. Countries generally have access to crude oil and refined products at roughly the same prices. The difference in the retail prices are to some extent due to varying costs of distribution but the main difference is taxes. On the other end of the distribution are primarily the major oil exporting countries that subsidize domestic fuel prices.
