Natural gas prices

September 2024 price update: The world average price is USD 0.082 per kWh for household users and USD 0.072 per kWh for business users. Prices in the U.S. are about USD 0.04 per kWh for households and businesses. Elsewhere, Iran, Algeria, Russia, and several other countries with abundant domestic energy resources and heavy subsidies have very low residential prices of less than USD 0.01 per kWh.

The most expensive country this quarter is Sweden with 0.219 USD per kWh followed closely by Singapore (0.190). Interestingly, Brazil is also in the top four countries even though incomes there are lower than in many other countries with similar natural gas prices.

The cheapest country in the European Union is Slovakia with 0.059 USD per kWh closely followed by Bulgaria (0.063). There is actually quite a bit of price difference within the EU as many countries have natural gas prices double that in the cheapest countries. Similar patterns hold for business rates which has a direct impact on business competitiveness.

About the data

Various countries report natural gas prices in kWh, Gigajoules or cubic meters and, for consistency, we report all prices in kWh. For both households and businesses, we collect several data points at different levels of consumption as prices often vary with consumption. On the chart, for households we show the prices at household consumption of 30,000 kWh per year and for businesses we use 1,000,000 kWh per year. The prices include all items in the natural gas bill. The methodology of price collection is described on the about page.
